New York-based dance diva Kelly King is on the rise and comin' atcha fast! Now, King was kind enough to take some time out of her busy sked to dish with Muzo about her new single 'Workin' Girl,' the remix process, her experience touring with Babyface and Michael Bolton, what she likes in a man - plus, she's got a big shout out to her drag sisters! (A big thanks to RJO Artists and Management for sharing their diva with me for this!) Lets get to it...

Muzo: Your new album is due out in 2010 - have you decided on a title, and what can your fans expect?
Kelly: If all continues as planned, I believe the album will be called 'DeFined.' My fans can always expect my passions to come out in my music, and kick-ass vocals!

Muzo: I'm loving those remixes of 'Workin' Girl' - been a big fan of Vibelicious' for quite sometime (click here for Muzo's interview with Vibelicious), plus the Twisted Dee and others rock, too! Were you involved in the process of deciding the vibe of the remixes? What's it like hearing your song completely changed up from the original?
Kelly: First off, I was blown away that all the DJ's wanted to be a part of my music! I love them all, and am also a fan of them all! With that said, I believe what they do is much like what I do, which is working hard for perfection in their skills and talents. Therefore, I feel it's really important to let them be artists as well. So, I stay out of their way! Let them make their magic. And yes!! I was so shocked to hear the original redone. It's a cool process. Both technically, and creatively. It takes a little getting use to, but now... I do believe I like these better!

Kelly: 'Workin' Girl' means a lot to me! This could be a long answer!

Muzo: What's the biggest challenge facing indie artists, such as yourself, in the Biz?
Kelly: I think the biggest challenge is still publicity, reaching the public on a large scale. We can now record like the big labels, we can put our promo packages together like the big labels, we can utilize the Internet like the big labels, but, the one thing that's still difficult for indies is competing with them to be seen and heard once all those other parts are done. Thankfully, there's more and more opportunities like what YOU are giving us to get exactly that! So thank you, Muzophile Blog! You rock!!
Muzo: You're my new best friend for that! lol
*****
Muzo: Advice to newbies who wanna break into the recording industry?
Kelly: My advice is stick to your guns!! Trust your instincts musically, and in business. And be smarter than artists from the past. That's what Indies have to do... Be smart. Educate yourself on how EVERYTHING works. Even though it's boring to the creative people like us, it's key in today's business!
*****
Muzo: And you're a Southern girl - born in Atlanta, raised in Nashville. Do you get back much? What about the south do you miss?
Kelly: Sadly, no. I don't get back as much as I'd like to. I miss my family most. I miss the beauty of Tennessee, and of course the food! I miss southern hospitality! It's by far the best! But I will say... I'm a New York gal now! I love NYC!!
*****
Muzo: Artists you admire?
Kelly: Celine, Dolly, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Alison Krauss, the rockers... Zeppelin, Stones, Aerosmith, oh, and RuPaul!! (Muzo Note: Hell yes! Click here for Muzo's interview with RuPaul!) Can you tell I love ALL music?!
*****
Muzo: How do you keep that 5 1/2 octave range in shape!?
Kelly: I had awesome training! Brett Manning of Singing Success, and I'm soooo thankful for that. Otherwise, as much sleep as I can get. Lots of water/humidifiers, and spicy food.
*****
Muzo: You toured with Babyface and Michael Bolton - they're legendary! What was that experience like?
Kelly: Both Babyface and Michael Bolton were huge moments in my career. Babyface was very cool because we opened in my home town. Crazy cool!
*****
Muzo: Now it's time to get all personal....I know you already got a man, but typically what type of guy do you usually go for?
Kelly: I usually go for the guys who I have to take care of, but hey, maybe something kicked in with this whole 'Workin' Girl' launch, cause I gotta good man now! Who takes care of ME! Finally!! ; )
*****
Muzo: Favorite part of a dude's body?
Kelly: Probably the chest. Mmmm yea!
*****
Muzo: Complete the sentence: 'On a date, the guy should...'
Kelly: Loaded gun... I'm a southern girl! On a date a guy should open doors, and pick up the bill!
*****
Muzo: Complete the sentence: 'In bed, the guy should...'
Kelly: Ooohh Lordy... I'm a hopeless romantic. Cheesey spread... In bed, the guy should caress me tenderly, and love me fiercely!! Ha! Such a dork!!
*****
Muzo: What's next for Kelly King?
Kelly: Promoting the hell outta 'Workin' Girl' WERK!!!

Awesome interview. Kelly seems so genuine and down to earth all the time. She is such a talent and really has been a hard "working girl." She deserves the best and she may be an indie, but the big labels don't know what they've missed!!!!
