DJ JAMIE J. SANCHEZ Talks Boys, Beats & New BEYONCE 'Sweet Dreams' Mix

San Francisco-based DJ Jamie J. Sanchez just released his very hot remix of Beyonce's 'Sweet Dreams' (click here to check it out!), which is the Hot Shot Debut on this week's Billboard Chart. Aside from his work with Industry at Club Mighty in San Fran, Jamie has worked with some of the biggest names in the Biz and has traveled the world while doing it.

Now Jamie takes the time to answer some of Muzo's questions - you know how I roll...we get up close and personal with the hottie on his current projects, what he likes in guy, on a date, in the sack and more. You know the drill, so lets get to it...

DJ Jamie Sanchez
Muzo: I absolutely love your mix of Beyonce's 'Sweet Dreams.' When doing a mix for a label like Columbia, do they tell you what they are looking for from the remix, or do you just do your thing? How exactly does that process work?

Jamie: Most labels know my style before hiring me to do a remix, and they don't usually tell me what sort of sound to go for.  Sometimes you nail it, sometimes you don't. I'd say the main thing the label wants is club play and DJ support and, being in the club scene for so long, I've developed an ear for what works.

As for the process; usually an A&R person or record promoter will call me up and discuss a project and we go from there. The label will send me all the vocal parts (lead, background vocals, etc), and I go to work creating beats, bass, synths - all that good stuff. Eventually, it starts to take shape until a remix is born. It's a lot of fun, but can sometimes be a tough job.

Muzo: And if your fans wanna check you live, they can head to Industry in San Fran, where you are a producer. Any events coming up they can look forward to?

Jamie: I've been doing Industry in San Francisco with my business partner Luke Johnstone since about 2003. First, we were at Mezzanine, then in 2006, we moved to Mighty. Industry hits once a month. Next up August 15th, then our huge Folsom Street Fair party with me and DJ Paulo on Saturday September 26th.

Muzo: You've been spinning since you were 18 and have been all over the world - any place in particular stand out to you as a favorite?

Jamie: I don't want to get in trouble here - so I won't single one place out. But, stand out cities for me have been Montreal, Amsterdam, Mexico City and Sydney. All have thriving dance scenes, and the crowds are up for it.

*****

Muzo: You've remixed five Billboard No. 1s this year, that's awesome! What did you do to celebrate?

Jamie: To celebrate, I like to buy new studio gear (it's an expensive habit). I'll also celebrate with some good tequila :o)

*****

Muzo: And the year's not over yet - can we expect a few more No. 1s added to your roster?

Jamie: I sure hope so. Oceana's "Body Rock" (Tommy Boy Records) just went to #1 this week. It was produced by my pal Manny Lehman and I did a remix for that. Next up is my latest remix of "Sweet Dreams" by Beyonce. We're hoping for another #1 with that (just found out it's the Hot Shot Debut on this week's Billboard Chart).  I've got a ton of Billboard projects coming up, but can't reveal much yet.

Jamie Sanchez, Tony Moran
Muzo: Who are your musical inspirations?

Jamie: The Pet Shop Boys for their creativity and longevity.  DJ Paulo for his drum work and all around work ethic.  Manny and Tony Moran (pictured right with Jamie) are good pals and I respect them as producers and DJs.  Tom Stephan (Superchumbo) is a big inspiration.  Wayne G, Tracy Young and DJ Escape. Plus some of the newer breed of DJ/producers like Alex Acosta, Bryan Reyes, Alex Cohen, DJ Ranny, Alexander. There's so many I draw inspiration from.

*****

Muzo: What type of guy do you usually go for?

Jamie: Well, I've been with my current partner almost 8 years now, so I'd say I go for him!

*****

DJ Jamie Sanchez
Muzo: Complete the sentence: 'On a date, the guy should...'

Jamie: Be funny and put the iPhone/Blackberry away!

*****

Muzo: Favorite personal vice?

Jamie: Very expensive tequila (Ocho, El Tosoro :o)

*****

Muzo: Least-favorite personal vice?

Jamie: Cigarettes.

*****

Muzo: Advice to new guys who want to get into remixing/DJing?

Jamie: Don't give up, learn to develop a thick skin, pay attention to your crowds, try new sounds, memorize your music, be professional, show up on time and stay sober in the DJ booth.

*****

Muzo: What's next for Jamie?

Jamie: Working with an amazing artist named Shelean Newman on a remix of the American standard, "Embraceable You."   Finish up my Audio Engineering degree from San Francisco State University.  And getting ready for Folsom Street Fair here in San Francisco in September.  Oh, and I'm treating my husband to a 2 week holiday in London and Paris in October.
