Q&A: DJ ALEX ACOSTA Talks Boys, Beats, more; New Mix 'Man' ft. JENN CUNETA Out Now

DJ Alex Acosta hails from Mexico City and is currently on his Noize Tour 09, which is traveling throughout Mexico. He has worked with the likes of world-renowned DJs Tiësto, Paul Van Dyke, Jose Spinnin Cortes, Edson Pride, Luis ErRe, Alex Garcia, Hernan Cattoneo and many more. I'm in love with his brand new remix of 'I Want That Man,' ft. Jenn Cuneta, which is available now. (Preview or purchase the track at PerfecetBeat or Amazon.) You'll also see mixes by DJ Mike Bordes, DJ JST, BetBoyz, Constantine and Elektric Pulse.
Now, Alex was kind enough to take the time to answer some of Muzo's questions - everything from his forthcoming full-length album (due out in early 2010), his musical inspirations and the difference between spinning for gay and straight crowds to what he likes in a man and the love in his life.

M: What projects are you currently working on?
A: Currently, I'm working on a full length CD, which I hope to be released in February of 2010. It will feature several collaborations with major producers and personal friends at the same time such as Edson Pride, Jose Spinnin Cortes and the others are for me to know... (It's going to be a major surprise.) You have no idea what's coming on it!

M: When did you first know you wanted to be a DJ?
A: Ever since I was a kid, I always had the music bug in me. Maybe because my dad was a musician. I know I wanted to be a DJ ever since I was a kid, because of the Break Dance influence I had. I have had a relationship with music my entire life, since my early days I was a choreographer and a dancer, and I shared the stage with people such as Vanilla Ice, Fey and Thalia. And at the same time, I had a rock band!
*****
M: And you were in a grunge band back in the day - how do you feel that experience helped shape your work with club/dance music?
A: Wow! That was a great learning school for me, since in my case I'm a lyricist. Because of work things I had to learn how to read notes, scales, etc., etc., but at the same time I learned how to play the guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and even to sing! So when I produce, I like to apply all my previous learning to my work as a producer. Most of my remixes have those bass lines that come directly from my bass, and not from a synth or VST. That's what makes the sound of my tracks more interesting.

A: I have to blame Antoine Clamaran for being my main inspiration of my sound. I'm a huge fan of his technique, music and way he produces. At the same time I admire David Guetta & Joachim Garraud. They both have a sound that keeps it always up there! Other producers I can tell you are Freemasons & Moto Blanco - and here is something that not that many people know (and that might come as a surprise to some of you) but I'm a huge fan of House Music as well. And last, and the most of important of them all, someone who's style and working technique I admire is Jose Spinnin Cortes, from Mexico, who has been a GREAT teacher for me and an enormous support for me within the music scene and my best friend at the same time!

M: Do you change the type of music you play for your audiences when you leave Mexico (or even within the Mexican Republic) - if so, how?
A: Of course, I have to! Every city is different, and the crowd can go from being the most laid back one to one of the most demanding, and you always must know how to "lead/manage" the crowd. There are cities where people are very commercial and all they just want to dance to are top mainstream hits. Such as Madonna, Lady GaGa, Beyonce, etc., etc., and there are more demanding cities where they want it hard and dark (music wise). That kind of experience you end up gaining it during the years.
*****
M: And which clubs do you enjoy spinning at more - gay clubs or straight?
A: Both crowds are completely different! And I love to play at both of them. Reason to this is that at straight clubs you play more Tech and Electro, and people love to have to have a good time with it, and they don't care who is DJing, all they want is good music. Playing at gay clubs is a different story. They are very demanding, and if they don't like the music, they just don't dance and they go to a different venue, or even more, they will just yell at you tell you: "Get Off the Booth! You SUCK at playing"! LMAO - they are cruel like that. But hey, they're paying their money, and I have to give them what they came to see me.
One time I saw a fellow DJ friend here in Mexico, that people made him get off the stage. But here is the counterpart to all this. When people like you, and you know how to drive them, people go up and down, and you're just their King for the night. So for them it's very important to know who's playing, since it's something very influential, since gay people know more of music than straight people, which makes the name to be a major storm of great music!!!

A: Well I've enjoyed more playing with Mexican DJs than the ones from abroad, since you always go to see these guys (DJs from outside Mexico) with great expectations, but at the end they end up playing really bad, and it's a big disappointment.

M: Out of all the remixes you've done, do you have a favorite?
A: As I keep working on a new track, I end up loving my job more and more, and you just get surprised by how much you grow as the time passes by. It's hard for me to pick one, since my sound is constantly changing, and I just don't like to get stuck in one genre/sound - and that can be confirmed by my manager! hahahaha, he's my Q&A guy!
*****
M: Lady Gaga is way hot right now - what was it like working with her?
A: Here is the funny thing. I feel like the first remix that many DJs, producers and fans got to know of me was "Another Cha Cha" by Offer Nissim. And I think that "Just Dance" by Lady GaGa confirmed the quality of my work. When I first heard the track I thought it was cute, so I started working on a mix for it, and out of the nothing it had a tremendous acceptance, that several friends and DJs such as Tracy Young keep playing it!

M: Are you single?
A: No, I'm in a relationship. I'm soooo in love! My better half has me going "head over heels"!!! hahaha! The fact that I can count on someone, who is my major support and inspiration in my career, is amazing! At the same time helps me to keep my feet on the ground, is my best adviser, and my best friend! And we have so many things in common, it's like... hahahaha, isn't it obvious how deeply in love am I? LOL
*****
M : Describe your ideal date night.
A: A Love Date? Or just a "date"? LOL - Love Date... hmmm, well I love lounges, especially those without couches, but those with large seating areas with lots of cushions, so that we can sit together, hugging each other, drinking a nice cocktail and enjoying each other's company and feeling that warmth that 2 bodies can give each other.... it's something amazing!
*****
M: What's someone gotta do to get naked with you?
A: Well, just get naked! Easy as that! LOL
*****
M: I visited Mexico City once and loved it there - I hung out in the Zona Rosa? Have you heard of it??
A: If you come to Mexico City and don't go to Zona Rosa, it's like going to France and not visiting The Eiffel Tower. Zona Rosa is the best gay area in Mexico! Excellent shopping places, restaurants, bars, clubs, people, etc., etc. Zona Rosa is a a beautiful area.
*****
M: Complete the sentence: 'In bed, I like...'
A: To sleep, nap, rest, watch TV....
*****
M: What advice would you give to guys who are just starting out and want to DJ?
A: Being a DJ is a major time investment! Being a DJ is not just downloading music from here or there, and just come up with a laptop and play music, it's much more than that. Looks, dedication, time, passion. I've always believed us musicians and DJs, we're born with it. And to the new ones, just be patient, and very professional to embark on this career called being a DJ

M: What's next for DJ Alex Acosta?
A: Just continuing with my Noize Tour 09 throughout Mexico - that's been going great so far, and at the same time finish my CD and keep on working on new remixes and more!!
