You're not exactly what most people would expect for a Go-Go Boy. Did you always want to dance? How did you get started?
I know, I'm a hairy beefy bear of a guy. In fact, it really didn't occur to me that I could go-go dance. I had seen go-go boys and admired them from the dance floor. I knew I would love to be up there, too, but they were all smooth, chiseled 20-somethings. I figured that ship had sailed. Then I met a dancer while lounging by the pool at The Empress Hotel in Asbury Park -- you know, Shep Pettibone's club, Paradise, is on the first floor -- and this sweet hairless little boy convinced me that there was a place for hairy muscular guys on the box. Fast forward a couple of years, and now I'm in charge of booking the dancers at that same club. I still have trouble believing it.

When did you first decide to be one of the first "Go-Go Men" in NYC?
Well, actually, I wouldn't say I'm the first. I've met a lot of hot go-go men working here in the city. They are a rare breed. Very sexy. I had been dancing in a few places in New Jersey for a few months when I first started wondering if I could cross the river to Manhattan. Other dancers I was performing with gave me leads. One in particular, Mike Mione, introduced me to John Lovett, one of the promoters at Cruising (now Bootleg/Cruising), plus, I also approached a couple of clubs on my own and that's how I found myself dancing at places like Splash, Urge, Rawhide and Monster, and for special parties and events like WOOF! at View Bar, Truck Stop at The Park and The Saint-at-Large's Black Party.

Yes! That's right. Can you believe that? I hope I can count on your vote! I'm the only one on the list with body hair and who's over the age of 30. They're all these adorable smooth young guys. I've danced with a few of them. Very sexy boys. They make for some, well, er, stiff competition, if you will. But wouldn't it be amazing if for once the hairy man won the title?

Aside from being more mature and hairier, what sets you apart? Why is Jonny Mack the better than the rest?
Wow, when you put it that way, I'm not sure how to answer. Whoever nominated me for the HX Award could tell you. But, since it's just me here, I'd have to say that I really enjoy what I'm doing. That's the thing guys tell me all the time. I also don't take this thing too seriously. I like to do sexy funny things -- like if I'm working on top of the bar in a place like Eagle, for example, when I approach someone new I like to squat down in my jock and push my hips forward until my knees frame their face. Then I'll affect a heavy Brooklyn accent and say something like ´They hired me to class up the joint. Do you think it's workin??' That usually breaks the ice, gets them laughing and earns me a buck or two.

Where was your first night dancing? Tell me about it...
These are good questions. Once I had decided to dance I got Mike Mione -- the same guy who helped hook me up in Manhattan -- to get me started. After a few pointers and a couple of practice sessions in my living room, he took me way out to Nyack, NY, to a small gay bar called BARZ. He had arranged to let me dance between his sets. That first time it was a mixed night, lesbians and gay men -- more of the former than the latter. After Mike did his first set, I went out to the box and climbed on. When I looked down I was stunned at how small the box was. All I could think was how easy it would be to fall off. When I looked up, all I saw was the huge backsides of lesbians on the dance floor looking the other way. Way beyond them, by the dressing room door on the other side of the bar, there was Mike gesticulating urgently and mouthing the words ´Move your arms. Move your arms...¡ I made $12 in tips that night.
And yet you came back for more.
I couldn't wait.

When did you know that you were doing something completely different in terms of go-go dancing?
I don't know how different it is. But the turning point for me was HX's 900 issue, when they dubbed me 'go-go bear.' I had this epiphany on two levels. First, that HX invited me to participate meant that I was getting noticed, and the other was that I was that I really am a bear. I reduced my dancing schedule and began seeking out the bear community consciously for the first time. I volunteered at THE FURBALL during Urban Bear Weekend, dancing for free for MetroBears and donating all the tip money I raised to The Center. I'll be doing the same thing for SUMMER FUR at The Center on June 26, the Friday before the parade. It's going to be a lot of fun.

Ok some fun questions: what type of men do you go for?
All types really. I don't have a type. I've learned that there's something in a guy's smile and the squint of his eyes that catches my interest. I've dated slender bespectacled tweedy professorial types, tattooed hairy daddy bears with bellies and twisted blond hairless bad boys with equal relish. I've harbored distractingly painful crushes on 6-foot-8-inch black men as well as sexy 5-foot-7-inch Filipinos. There's just no telling.

Poolside at Paradise. It's just a completely different experience. If Shep's playing, the music is terrific and being right next to the pool opens up so many sexy possibilities.

We're about to see you in Jipsta's new music video for his remake of George Michael's 'I Want Your Sex.' Any other musical aspirations?
It was a lot of fun making that video with Jipsta. We shot it in Paradise and all over and around The Empress Hotel in Asbury Park. I think it came out great. I just participated in a shoot for the next Naked Highway video. It should be out by the end of the Summer, or so Sy tells me.

What's next for Jonny Mack?
I just did my first promoting with Matt Tratner and Ricardo Studmuffin for Jack@Aspen. I enjoyed it. I've been looking into more promotion opportunities -- possibly a new party or weekly event -- down the road. That seems like a logical direction to head in. Stay tuned...

Hey Muzo just had to commend you on yet another amazing interview. Really love how you get so up close and personal with musicians, porn stars and even go go boys. A friend of mine works at Paradise and I have to say it's one of the best places to party, especially during the summer. Jonny Mack is beyond hot, and anyone would have to be a fool to kick him out of bed after a few hours of fun. Also he seems to be a great guy and glad to see someone so gorgeous with so much personality. Keep up the good work Muzo and I really hope we can collaborate on some ventures in the near future.
