DJ DREW G Talks Up DJing for Obama, Working for Rauhofer, What He Really Likes in Bed and Sex While Spinning

Based in New York, superhot DJ Drew G has been kind enough to talk with Muzo about everything from how he recently DJd Barack Obama's inauguration dance and working for Peter Rauhofer, to what he really likes in a guy, in the sack and much more.

Drew is also a featured remixer (along with Macutchi, Twisted Dee, RevoLucian and Joe Gauthreaux) on RuPaul's latest track 'Cover Girl.' Tracks are now available at RuPaul's site. (After you're done with Drew, click here to listen in on my phone call with RuPaul the other day.) Lets get to the good stuff...

Muzo: Congratulations for being chosen from a long list of DJs to spin at the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Dance for Barack Obama. I'm dying to know two things - what did you feel when you first found out it would be you spinning there...and what was the event like? Did you get to see Beyonce be a diva backstage or anything? lol

Drew: I was very excited to spin the event; I mean, it was a once in a lifetime affair. Sadly tho, I did not get to meet him or see anyone famous backstage - they were all wandering around the dance floor and club space doing their thing. It was a crazy week, truly crazy week. The set is available to download on my facebook page tho. (Muzo note: Scroll down the page, it's below his pics.)

Muzo: You had five albums out before you were 18 - what type of music was it, and how did you do that? Would you say your passion for the music was inherent - or...?

Drew: Believe it or not, I produced Death Metal records when I was a kid and played and sang on 5 albums with my band "Absence of Faith" back in 2001.

I had fallen in love with the guitar in about 1995 when my father had gotten a job working for Van Halen on their Balance tour (I was 12). Seeing Eddie up and close and personal made me want to play and be able to do what he did. Sadly, before that moment I had no real interest in music. My parents had purchased 2 records for me prior to that year: Carly Simon's Greatest Hits and Boston's first album. I took a liking to the Boston album and the new boombox they had bought me as well. I did however fiddle on my younger sisters acoustic guitar at some points; she had gotten it for Christmas the year before and never would touch it, so I would steal it and play around with it.

Muzo: At what point did you know this would be your life?

Drew: About midway through high school I knew this was the way it was going to be. I NEVER would pay attention at school and would sit and write music and guitar tabulature all day instead of taking notes. I'd stay up all night practicing and working my first job (salesman at Sam Goody) and sleep through first period (Musical Theory) and the first 3 other classes of the day lol. Although I did ace the final in music theory my senior year, we were supposed to write a short 8 measure piece for 2 instruments. I, of course, wrote a full symphony - 100 pages - for a full orchestra entitle "Inn I Evighetens Morke." It shocked the teacher and won him over.

Muzo: And you used to work at Peter Rauhofer's label Star 69. What was it like working there - did you learn anything from Peter?

Drew: No, sadly Peter did not teach me much. It was quite the experience working for him, after idolizing someone for so long it's a bit weird working for them, but I worked hard and to the best of my abilities while there, I was still pretty young and did some dumb shit but, hey you live and you learn right?

Muzo: Who would you say are your musical inspirations?

Drew: Edward Van Halen. I am inspired by people who not only make great things with their instruments but change the way those instruments are made.

As for DJ's no one has really wowed me lately, some Euro DJs for sure, Chris Ortega, Chris Montana, Eric Smax, etc.

Muzo: Describe your ideal date?

Drew: Honestly, I had the perfect night out the other night just a few nights ago. Nice 3 course meal, great wine, fell asleep on his shoulder on the crosstown bus and cuddled drinking more wine and watching 'American Idol.' Yea, deep down I'm a sap...deal.

Muzo: Top or bttm?

Drew: Totally vers but lean top.

Muzo: What is your biggest turn on in another guy?

Drew: His eyes.

*****

Muzo: Favorite part of your body?

Drew: Guess

*****

Muzo: Most interesting place you've had sex?

Drew: I dunno, I've had sex in some pretty interesting spots although I must say I've always fantasized about doing something mid set and even more so fantasized about doing it at the Black Party

*****

Muzo: Complete the sentence: 'When in bed, the guy should...'

Drew: Ha, do I really have to? haha...be open-minded bro. No one likes a closed-minded guy in his bedroom - doesn't matter how hot you are if you're not willing to explore yourself with someone, then what's the point?

DJ Drew G
Muzo: Favorite personal vice?

Drew: Hmmmmm, I love Jesus.

*****

Muzo: Least favorite personal vice?

Drew: But sometimes I drink a little......

*****

Muzo: Advice to new guys who want to become DJs?

Drew: Just be yourself.

Muzo: What's next for DJ Drew G?

Drew: For Drew G?? Well I am releasing tracks from Ru Paul and Telling On Trixie, as well as 2 originals with Rachel Panay and a cover song with her due out in March 09. Black Party this year, as well as the Pork'd tour starting in June thanks to my amazing manager Andrew Briskin at Tango Blues.

LOL at the end of the day I'd still kill to do a Star 69 mix...so Peter, if you're reading this...LOL and if you want to know what's truly next I'll tell ya: I need to shower and get to the gym with my man before I head to DC to spin all weekend!
