'THE TWIST' Is #1 on Billboard's All-Time Hot 100 Top Songs

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Hot 100 chart, Billboard has compiled a list of 'The All-Time Hot 100 Top Songs.' At the top of the list? Chubby Checker's 'The Twist.'
How were the Top 100 chosen? According to Billboard, the 50th Anniversary Hot 100 Song and Artist charts are based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100, since the chart's inception in August 1958 through the issue dated July 26, 2008. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least.
The chart, which was launched August 4, 1958, measures popularity by incorporating both radio play and sales. So from what I gather - the 'all-time' list is based on how long the song stayed at number one (or close to number one) and how long it remained on the charts altogether - and the higher the ranking, the more points it was assigned for this list.
Geoff Mayfield, director of charts at Billboard, says, "This is simply a chronicle of how each of these songs performed in their era on the Hot 100. We're not saying these are the most memorable songs of your life. That would be something that's almost impossible to determine," said Mayfield. "Everyone has a subjective frame of reference."
So which songs made the all-time top 10 on the Hot 100?
10. Toni Braxton, 'Un-Break My Heart'
9. Mariah Carey, 'We Belong Together'
8. The Beatles, 'Hey Jude'
7. Debby Boone, 'You Light Up My Life'
6. Olivia Newton-John, 'Physical'
5. Los del Rio, 'Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)'
4. LeAnn Rimes, 'How Do I Live'
3. Bobby Darin, 'Mack the Knife'
2. Santana Featuring Rob Thomas, 'Smooth'
1. Chubby Checker, 'The Twist'
Other entries of note - at least to MUZO
• In the complete list of 100 top songs, there's no Britney, Christina, Celine or Cher - altho Whitney, Toni, Fergie and Paula made the cut - and Usher, too, quite a few times.
• Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's 1996 hit 'One Sweet Day' still holds the record for most weeks spent at number one (16 weeks) - how is it in spot 29?
• Madonna's only appearance is with 'Like a Virgin' at 95. Wha!?
Also released - Billboard's All-Time Top Artists
How were they determined? Also based on the same system - most weeks on the charts, closest to number one for the longest duration. Yay, Madonna! Having a zillion top 10 songs and being on the charts for 30 years pays off!

9. Whitney Houston
8. Michael Jackson
7. Janet Jackson
6. Mariah Carey
5. Stevie Wonder
