Q&A: Dance Divas Amber, Zelma Davis unite for 'No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)'

Dance divas Amber and Zelma Davis unite for their cover of the 1979 track 'No More Tears (Enough Is Enough),' originally recorded by Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer. International release date for the track is August 12 and will be available in iTunes and virtually all digital music stores. You can preview the track on Amber's Official Website or Zelma's MySpace Page.
Amber has racked up an impressive seven consecutive No. 1 dance singles and an additional six Top 10 dance hits. If you've been near a club anywhere in the last few years, you undoubtedly have danced your ass off to 'This Is Your Night,' 'One More Night,' 'If You Could Read My Mind,' or 'Sexual (li da di).' Cher even covered Amber's 2000 hit 'Love One Another, which earned Amber a Grammy nom as writer.
Zelma Davis, the iconic voice behind the C+C Music Factory, took C+C mega-hits 'Here We Go,' 'Things That Make You Go Hmmm...,' and 'Just a Touch of Love' to the top of the Billboard charts. And, I'll be honest, it was cuz of her I remained popular in high school. I brought that first C+C cassette (yes, cassette) with me to every party and always managed to get the room going. (Yes, even back then, Muzo was pushing kickin' beatz on people.) ![]()
Now the two dance divas unite for a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration. I got a chance to ask the ladies some personal questions - their celebrity crushes, who they would be if they were a gay man, what's in their iPods, taking on Donna and Barbra and much more. And check out the vid for 'No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)' below:
Check out the Q&A:
Muzo: Congratulations to you both on your duet of the cover 'No More Tears (Enough Is Enough).' It's one of the greatest dance songs of all time, and in my humble opinion, you two legendary divas nailed it outta the park and gave the song a whole new life. So with that said:
What does it take to successfully remake a classic?
A: A lot of time and thought and preparation. When I had the idea - about six years ago - I knew that I needed a decent partner with a great vocal and respect for the history of this title but at the same time taking it to 2008 without being tacky and cheap.
Z: Yes - It takes genuine love and respect for them and the song, as well, because of the original and artists that previously recorded it.
Muzo: How did you decide to work together - who approached whom?
Z: Amber suggested that we work together. We met years ago at a pride event in Milwaukee.
A: Yup - I saw her on stage in 2004 and was just amazed how a girl with such a petite 5'2" frame could have such a huge vocal...and we clicked right away, especially also on the human level, and that is what it takes to make it happen in my opinion..chemistry all the way.
Muzo: In your YouTube interview, Zelma, you mention how Donna Summer was one of your earliest inspirations - and Amber, you say yours was Streisand. What thoughts were going through your head, regarding these two artists, when you went into the recording studio?
Z: I hoped that they would like our version.
A: I was just thrilled and happy that we finally started and our schedules finally collided. I am not sure if they will ever hear it but if they do- I would hope that they are happy with it.They both are huge influences in our lives as vocalists.
Muzo: You also mention in the interview that when it comes to dating and relationships, you don't have the time or patience to deal with the games. First off, god bless you both. I totally hear you there! But what advice would you give to those seeking love?
Z: Be what you seek!
A: Amen, Zelma...do not change for anyone - be yourself, otherwise it will unravel anyway.
Muzo: If you were a gay man, who would you want to be?
Z: Carson Kressley. He's awesome.
A: Hahaha - LOVE him...he is hysterical!
Muzo: What's your most memorable live performance?
Z: Performing in Brazil in the 90s. I have a video of it somewhere. It was the perfect show, from the sound system to the crowd.
A: Well - we are going there again on September the 13th...we get to enjoy all the gay hot Brazilian guys (lol) - that would be my first time, actually, which is really weird bc I know for a fact that my songs are huge there.
My most memorable performance would be my very first one at the radio B-Bash in Chicago in 1996.
I almost peed on myself.
My first single, 'This is your night,' had taken off really fast, and I was thrown into the cold water - I still remember what I was wearing and how I introduced myself on stage. And when I started singing, 30,000 people started singing along, and I still remember how awesome that felt.
Muzo: When you're out at a dance club, what music makes you wanna get up, hit the floor and dance?
Z: 80s music, the stuff I grew up listening to.
A: I do not go out to clubs at all - not my thing, really - as it is also my working ground. I cannot identify with a lot of the music out there these days and rather spend it being productive myself.
But I love the 80s also in regard to the diversity of the music. Good times...
Muzo: When you hang out with your friends, what's a fun night out?
Z: Girls night out. Hitting the club, then an afterhours spot. I only go once in a while, but I love it.
A: Calm and quiet - a nice meal at a great restaurant and good conversation.
Muzo: Any chance you cool chicks will come hang out with me and my friends? I promise I won't ask you to sing any of your number one dance tracks that my crew and I have worshipped over the years. Drinks are on me. ![]()
Z: Sure!
A: Absolutely!
Muzo: If I were to look at your iPod, what songs would show up under 'most frequently played'?
Z: "Love to Love You Baby" by Donna Summer, "Damaged" by Danity Kane, "Disturbia" by Rihanna, "So Sick" by Neyo, and a song I'm working on for pride called "Rise."
A: Michael Bubble "You and I," Amanda Marshall "Beautiful Goodbye," Kelly Clarkson "Sober," Anuna "Our Wedding day," BeBe and CeCe Winans "Heaven," Imogen Heap "The Moment I Said It," Johan Mayers 'Daughters," Peter Gabriel "I Grieve," Jill Scott "It's Love," Oleta Adams "You've Got to Give Me Room," Mercy Me "I Can Only Imagine," Sting "Fragile," Erik Satie "Gymnopedies," Annie Lennox, Barbra Streisand....just an array of music, and as you can see, strangely enough, no dance music... ![]()
Muzo: Who's your celebrity crush - and why?
Z: Harrison Ford!
A: Mark Consuelos is just hot...reminds me so much of my first real Love...that smile is a killer...Andy Garcia...something about his eyes...
Muzo: When it comes to a potential lovah, what 'wows' you?
Z: Honesty and a pretty face.
A: Intelligence, humor, independence, confidence, honesty, (com)passion, having clear goals and knowing themselves - perfect looks are not important to me.
Muzo: Any chance you two will collaborate again?
Z: Absolutely! I love working with Amber.
A: We are not done...I want to see Zelma succeed with that talent that is so deserving and all she has been through in her past career...she is just a delight to work with.
Muzo: When can your fans see you next?
Z: September 13, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
A: That is right! For more info on our schedules, please go to www.myspace.com/ambersings or www.myspace.com/zelmadavis

Well, first of all "Everybody Dance Now" and "Sexual" are on my list of favorite dance records of all time! Like Amber, I come from the Netherlands and I simply love her music. Been following her career ever since it started with "This is your night". She never was HUGE in the Netherlands which is a shame because she has such a great voice. And Zelma, well, isn't she a DIVA? I thought so too!
Really like this new single, ordered it on CD straight away and it's in my CD-player RIGHT NOW! Enough is never enough for me!
